As a biopharmaceutical company, AstraZeneca (AZ) is on a mission to push the boundaries of science to transform the lives of patients living with cancer, and ultimately eliminate cancer as a cause of death. As such, Singapore Cancer Society (SCS) is a very important and invaluable partner to help AZ extend support to patients and the community beyond just life changing medicines.

Mr Ti Hwei AstraZenecar

This year, AZ cemented its partnership with SCS through a signed MOU in June, as well as launched ‘Cancer Can Give’ which is a movement to empower cancer survivors to make a difference to society.

Cancer Can Give provides cancer survivors the opportunity to share their stories, to inspire others to keep going in the face of hardship, and to redefine the public perception of what it is like to live with cancer. “We hope that the Cancer Can Give movement can change people’s view of cancer survivors. They are not only patients and beneficiaries, but are also partners and advocate in our joint societal mission to defeat cancer,” said Mr. How Ti Hwei, Country President of AZ Singapore.

“Since launch, we already had two uplifting events under Cancer Can Give. For the first event, I personally got to do a clean-up of the Marina Reservoir on kayak alongside the SCS Purple Dragons. We picked up 15 kg of trash! The second event brought together cancer survivors and girls from Gladiolus Place, which is a non-profit Christian healing home. The cancer survivors and the girls shared stories to inspire each other and to give recognition to the hardship in their respective lives. The energy and positivity of our cancer survivors are truly inspiring! We hope that Cancer Can Give will allow more cancer survivors to touch more lives and make a greater difference all around the island in the coming years.”

Through the partnership, AZ and SCS collaborate on initiatives to provide greater care to cancer patients beyond just the treatment, including programmes that better support cancer patients’ psychosocial and financial needs. AZ is partnering with SCS also on public education and outreach efforts especially for women’s gynaecological cancers, breast cancer, lung cancer, and prostate cancer.

In conclusion, Mr. How said, “With cancer incidence on the rise, we encourage more companies to take part or contribute to the cancer awareness campaigns to raise public knowledge about cancer. This will help with prevention, recognition of symptoms, therefore early diagnosis and better outcomes. We all have our part to play in the fight against cancer, no matter how big or small. So do your part!”
