“Breast cancer survivor Jessica Too feels that the awareness and help from the community will give a cancer patient or survivor a sense of belonging.
Jessica Too found out about her diagnosis in 2010. Being diagnosed with breast cancer affected her physical and mental state. “It took me some time to come to terms with my diagnosis. What motivated me was my family. I kept visualising being with my sons.”
She came across Singapore Cancer Society (SCS) when she was surfing the net trying to find out about support groups. She signed up for SCS Reach to Recovery Support Group (for breast cancer survivors) in 2011. Few months later, she got elected to be the Chairperson.
She exclaimed, “During my time as a chairperson over the four years, I have learnt to accept the different characters and personalities of each individual. Through this I was able to give back to the cancer community. It also gave a sense of fulfilment and be a better person. Loving others means more time and effort. I have learnt to appreciate others more for what I have received.”
