“Cancer will affect all aspects of an individual’s life. Meet Calvin Lim, a young cancer survivor, who has embarked on a journey connect with other cancer patients in their recovery. He feels that a cancer patient’s journey to recovery becomes more achievable when they can speak to someone who has walked in the same shoes.

28 year old Calvin Lim, was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2018.During his recuperation period after his surgery he was introduced to the Singapore Cancer Society (SCS) Rehabilitation Centre and benefited from its services.

Few months later, he received a newsletter from SCS. In it there was a section calling for volunteers to be SCS Patient Ambassadors.

Immediately he knew that this was his calling. Calvin said, “Firstly, I wanted to give back and support the SCS which has greatly helped me in my recovery. Secondly, I wanted to help other cancer patients, especially the younger one. I want to give them the support and to let them know that they are not alone. This group of young patients may not have support from the same age group and therefore I wanted to do my part.”

He added, “This is different from the support group. This is more on a one to one basis where you are able to reach out further to them, especially to the newly diagnosed ones. Some of them may be shy to share their fears in a group setting. Through this personal sharing, it is of my hope that the patient would become more positive.”

Calvin has gone through the training sessions conducted by SCS. He feels that this is very important as he is now aware of the dos and don’ts.

To other cancer patients, he said, “Don’t’ ever give up hope. Many others in similar situation have walked through the path and emerged victorious. Continue to fight for your family, friends and yourself.”

About SCS Patient Ambassador Programme

This programme equips current support group members to be patient ambassadors to reach out to those who are undergoing treatment or are newly diagnosed. Through home and/or hospital visits, patient ambassadors help them to come to terms with their diagnosis as they seek treatment.
