Food Fermentation Fun
The Food Fermentation workshop with The Therapeutic Kitchen Founder Ms So Hwee Mei is a firm favourite among our support groups. This time, the SCS Reach to Recovery Support Group got to enjoy learning about the benefits of fermented foods and how to read labels when purchasing them.
Since the topic was familiar to most of the participants, the session was highly interactive, with the ladies engaging Ms So in discussion. The participants have been making their own fermented dishes at home and incorporating them into their diets for their mental and physical health.
The session ended with Ms So sharing her sauerkraut recipe and giving freshly made ones for the ladies to bring home.
The support group members always look forward to Ms So’s workshops.
“Ms So is a good trainer,” said SCS Reach to Recovery Support Group member Tan Soon Imm, “I look forward to repeating the session next year and covering a different aspect of fermented food.”
SCS SemiColon Support Group heads to Gardens by the Bay
The SCS SemiColon Support Group, which is for colorectal cancer, enjoyed a day out at Gardens by the Bay. The casual outing allowed for both support group members and their caregivers to get to know each other better as they appreciated the wide variety of flora curated.
“I like that I was able to meet with my old friends and interact with the new members,” said support group member Loh Wan Heng.
Here’s looking forward to more of such opportunities as we continue to live in the new post-pandemic normal.
What do eye and vision health have to do with cancer?

Led by LSC Eye Clinic Opthalmologist Dr Errol Chan, the 16 participants learnt about the common signs of eye diseases post cancer treatment, common eye diseases that affect older adults, and when to seek help for eye and vision concerns.
An expert in cataract surgery, the medical and surgical treatment of retinal diseases, and uveitis, Dr Chan meticulously explained the parts of the eye, and what to look out for in living with cancer.
Lavender Ring - Makeup & Photos With Smiles! Experience, a collaboration between Shiseido & Japan Creative Centre (JCC) X Singapore Cancer Society (SCS)
First established by Shiseido Japan in 2017, LAVENDER RING is part of Shiseido Life Quality Center’s project that encompasses volunteer-based activities to bring smiles to the faces of all cancer survivors. Using the symbolic colour of “lavender”, which represents all types of cancer, the ring represents the networks of people who understand cancer and support cancer survivors coming together.
This year, which marks the 150th anniversary of the company’s founding, Shiseido collaborated with Japan Creative Centre (JCC), Embassy of Japan and Singapore Cancer Society (SCS) to launch Lavender Ring’s first event- Makeup & Photos with Smiles.
This initiative leverages the power of makeup to encourage the social reintegration of cancer patients and survivors, through sharing photographs of them wearing Shiseido’s Perfect Cover makeup.
SCS was privileged to be able to take part in this event, with 35 beneficiaries being pampered in their makeovers with Shiseido Beauty Consultants and hairstylists. They took part in professional photoshoots after, which captured their memories of the day.
“The Lavender Ring Photo frame with my quote holds a special meaning to me,” said Lin Meixu, “It is a great memento from this event.:
The objective of this event was to empower cancer survivors to live their lives confidently with a smile, and to share their stories to change the social climate and stigma surrounding the disease.
“I never got to do my makeup and hair professionally,” said Deepa Maurya, “This is a dream come true for me and I couldn’t recognise myself.”
Through this event, we were able to fulfill the dreams of our support group members and give them confidence in the process. The SCS staff witnessed the members inspiring and uplifting one another, which was very heartwarming.

Healthy Women, Healthier Families @ One Punggol
Cervical cancer may be the 10th most diagnosed cancer among women in Singapore, but it is also one of the most preventable cancers with HPV vaccination and regular cervical cancer screening.
SCS held a cervical cancer awareness talk at the Healthy Women, Healthier Families event at One Punggol on 16 October. Dr See Hui Ti, member of SCS Women Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Committee and Senior Consultant at Parkway Cancer Centre, shared the must-knows of cervical cancer with over 80 attendees. The talk was followed by a demonstration of physical therapy exercises for patients with cancer, conducted by Deputy Head of Singapore Cancer Society Rehabilitation Centre Ms Aw Hui Zhen. Joining Hui Zhen for her segment was Ms Summer Ng, one of Singapore's youngest cervical cancer survivors. Summer spoke about her cancer journey, inspiring all who attended.
With the aim of raising awareness of colorectal cancer and of our various screening services, SCS set up an educational booth alongside other event partners at the atrium. We distributed FIT Kits at no cost and shared about our breast screening and HPV vaccination programmes.
The Healthy Women, Healthier Families event, which hoped to champion good health among women at all stages of life, was officiated by Rahayu Mahzam, Senior Parliamentary Secretary at the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Law.
We hope this event was the nudge attendees needed to start taking charge of their health for themselves and also their loved ones.
To learn more about the screening services that we offer at no cost, visit: https://www.singaporecancersociety.org.sg/get-screened/book-your-screening-appointment-at-scs-clinic-bishan.html
We are hosting our free prostate and lung cancer awareness talks on 12 and 19 Nov respectively. To sign up visit: linktr.ee/manyourprostate and linktr.ee/lcam22

SCS Reach to Recovery Support Group – The Art of Being Zen
The SCS Reach to Recovery Support Group members, ladies who have lived through breast cancer, enjoyed a Zentangle Art Workshop with Lindsay Lim, a certified Zentangle Teacher™.
Lindsay started the session with simple ground rules, while she emphasised that this form of drawing allows everyone to explore without being afraid to make mistakes. Zentangle gave everyone the chance to create beautiful and unique art pieces.
Since most of the ladies had never attended an art session previously, they were apprehensive and unsure on how to start. 30 minutes into the session though, everyone was rapidly gaining confidence with the types of patterns they could create from what they had learned. Their final artwork is beyond what they imagined when they first started.
The Zentangle® Method is an easy-to-learn, relaxing and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing repeated structured patterns using simple elemental strokes such as line, dot, curves and orbs. More than just a drawing process, it is also a journey of self-discovery. There is no right or wrong in Zentangle as it is non-representational and unplanned so that you can focus on each stroke, enjoy the process, and not worry about the outcome by allowing the unexpected to occur. It is a life skill that you can apply anytime, anywhere to enhance relaxation, mindfulness, focus, creativity, well-being and many more.
Member Julie Lim said, "I enjoyed the workshop so much as the teacher was very skilled and knowledgeable. I hope to attend her lesson again in future."
Stephanie Caspelich left the session inspired and refreshed. "I enjoyed learning about Zentangle and all the wonderful ways it can inspire and enrich our lives. Thank you, SCS, for always offering meaningful and creative ways to help cancer warriors like me continue the good fight."

SCS New Voice Club Support Group Celebrates Mid-Autumn
24 members of the SCS New Voice Club Support Group met up to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival together.
They had a ball of a time with the games, activities, and even a talent showcase by their own members.
They got to flex their creative muscles while interacting and getting to know each other better. What a memorable day indeed!
SCS Walnut Warriors Support Group Goes Back to Basics
The SCS Walnut Warriors went back to basics in a session with SCS Resident Clinical Sexologist Dr Martha Tara Lee. In a workshop that aimed to address taboos surrounding cancer and intimacy, Dr Martha gave tips for better sex beyond just the physical.
Prostate cancer often affects intimate relationships of survivors, and Dr Martha talked about this in a fun, light-hearted, and open session.
With her belief that sex being about trust, closeness, intimacy, belongingness, desire and being desired, Dr Martha worked to impart her knowledge to our Walnut Warriors. The members left the workshop having expanded their sexual knowledge and improved their sexual skills to become better lifelong lovers.
SCS Bishana Ladies Support Group learns about food fermentation
Ms So Hwee Mei, founder of The Therapeutic Kitchen, is a clinical dietitian with more than 10 years of experience working in various hospitals. SCS Bishana Ladies Support Group enjoyed a food fermentation workshop with Ms So, in which they got to learn more about the benefits of fermented foods.
Having pioneered Oncology Nutrition at the National University Hospital, Ms So is a fountain of wealth when it comes to the knowledge of how the food consumed affects the health of cancer patients and survivors.
The session started with an informative theory-based understanding of fermentation, its benefits on mental and physical health, and how to read labels when purchasing fermented food items like kimchi and sauerkraut. Ms So also gave the members tips on incorporating more fermented foods into their diets.
The highlight of the session was the sauerkraut making demonstration. Ms So carefully explained what to note when making sauerkraut at home, e.g using eco wash to enhance the cleanliness and taste of the washed produced, salinity to maintain between 2-5% of weight of cut produce and to leave in cool and bright area for around 3 weeks.
Everybody left with a bottle of sauerkraut at the end of the session!

Volunteers Against Cancer
In the lead up to Singtel-Singapore Cancer Society Race Against Cancer 2022 and on the event day itself, more than 400 volunteers supported us through Race Pack packing back in August, Race Entry Pack Collection on 3 and 4 September, and the physical race on 18 September 2022.
Across the two days of packing, we saw volunteers from SCS, Logwin Logistics and our title sponsor, Singtel, who packed more than 4,500 race packs. We would like to extend our gratitude to Logwin Logistics for providing their office space for the packing.
Singtel volunteers packed the sponsored items into the RAC race packs.

Volunteers spent their precious weekend with us issuing race packs and assisting with the fringe activities like the photo wall. More than 2,000 race packs were collected by our participants at the Race Entry Pack Collection (REPC) at Velocity@Novena. The collection would not be possible without the support of our volunteers, especially those who came down on both days.

We are thankful to have had close to 300 volunteers as Event Support, taking on various roles such as Route Marshalls, Athletes Welfare, photographers, videographers, and many more for our 14th Race Against Cancer 2022.
SCS volunteers, students from Pei Hwa Secondary School, School of Science and Technology, Pasir Ris Secondary School, Hwa Chong Institute, staff from both Jabil Singapore and NTN Bearing-Singapore Pte Ltd as well as our official race pacers Singapore-based running community, Running Department, rallied together to give their all for a common cause.

Words cannot express our heartfelt gratitude to the volunteers for sacrificing their precious weekend and braving the torrential rain for the cancer community.
A big thank you to all volunteers that supported the three events!
