There is evidence from laboratory and clinical studies that the following substances can potentially reduce one’s risk of prostate cancer:
- Soya products. These contain phytoestrogens which delay the growth of prostate cancer.
- Green tea. Polyphenols in green tea can inhibit prostate cancer cells
- Tomatoes have lycopene, a carotenoid that kills cancer cells.
- Antioxidants such as selenium, vitamin E have been found in studies to reduce the risk of prostate cancer.
- Vitamin D.
- A reduced animal fat intake. Studies have shown that a diet with 26g of fat per day has an additional attributable risk of 13%, compared to 13g of fat per day.
- Finasteride. This drug, an enzyme that blocks the conversion of testosterone to its more active compound, is under trial to prevent prostate cancer.
