| Welcome
to the My Happy Healthy Family website. The initiative
is a public health education programme that aims
to help Singaporean families battle the nation's
top 2 killer diseases, cancer and cardiovascular
diseases.

 |
Cardiovascular
disease and Cancer are Singapore's top two
killer diseases |
|
Collectively, cardiovascular
disease and cancer accounts for 59.9% of all
deaths in Singapore |
|
Family
history is an important 'risk factor' to both
cardiovascular disease and cancer |
|
Are
you and your family at risk? |

It is called ‘family history’ and
it puts entire families at risk. ‘Family
history’ does not mean that all members
of the family will get this disease, it just means
that some members of that family may have a greater
chance of having a certain condition. ‘Family
history’ is an important ‘risk factor’
when it comes to Singapore’s top two killer
diseases – heart disease and cancer.

How can we manage such diseases, especially if
we have a ‘family history’? Well,
the first step is awareness. Awareness that these
conditions tend to ‘run’ in your family
is important as you may then take the necessary
steps -to go for health screenings in conditions
that are recommended by reputable medical bodies
such as Singapore Heart Foundation and Singapore
Cancer Society and to adjust your lifestyle, if
necessary.
Appropriate
health screenings and visits to your doctor helps
as it may lead to a ‘timely’ diagnosis,
which increases your chance to better manage and
treat the disease. The earlier the disease is
diagnosed, the better the chance in treating it.
Informing your doctor of the condition that runs
in your family will also help him to look out
for the early warning signs of the condition.
